Not unemployed yet.

We had another round of layoffs at my company. This was round number four. I'm still employed for now, but we're basically back to the number of employees there were when I started. If the telecom industry doesn't pick up in the next 3-6 months I will undoubtedly get canned. I wonder if I should move somewhere else when my company decides to give me the boot. It's a tough decision to make, but I wouldn't mind living someplace new. Hmm, well I'm still having fun in San Diego. We shall see...

Reminds me of the work I did on the Roller Coaster. It was up and down. They had a habit of hiring new workers every day right up to the day they started laying off. It was a wicked psychological trip. Would I be next? The boss man walked around with very loose trousers and all the workers lined up to kiss ass. It was like the Pope extending his hand to obsequious sycophants. I could do better I told myself. Take your measly sixty grand and shove it!

I walked off the job. I refused to work under that kind of pressure.

I started building my own houses. I could be the boss! I worked ten, twelve hours a day. I had to supervise lazy and disgruntled employees. I was putting up the money and everyone else was getting paid. They did shoddy work and still made all the money.

I longed for a small cubicle in the basement of a government building somewhere. A place where I could watch a clock and long to turn sixty five.

I look back now and realize that it was a terrible mistake. I should have gone down with the ship. Loyal to the vision of a taking a roller coaster full circle.

It never made it. They ran the test and after the first big hill, it never gained enough momentum to crest the second. It just oscillated for a minute or two stuck between two hills that were too steep to climb. All the workers got paid doubletime to take it apart and put it together again. They retired early. I'm still watching the clock.
