Salon and the video of Nick Berg's murder.
Salon recently posted the video of Nick Berg's murder on their site. The response by readers was split between those who approved and those who were appalled. This is my response to the letters denouncing Salon for posting the video.
This question of the media's responsibility to censor itself is fascinating. I for one am grateful to Salon for making the video available (with appropriate warnings,) although I myself had no desire to watch it. My response to readers who disagreed with Salon's decision to post the video is twofold. First, I do not believe that Salon actively exploited the video by posting it on their site. And thus I do not believe that this action caused Nick Berg's family additional distress. Second, I do not want the editors of Salon to shield me from information that they deem too unsettling. EVER.
The information you seek is out there. If you search for it, be prepared to stomach a bitter pill.
