Shades of brilliance.

Shakespeare's Sister on detainee rights.

The thing that divides us is not that they really believe, as they claim, that it is possible to “end” terrorism or magically transform the Middle East into a place where America has no enemies; they know, as do we, that there will always be people who endeavor to kill Americans. What divides us is that we see politics, diplomacy, the Geneva Conventions, international law, and the obligation to respect human dignity as the conduits through which we might try to effectively address those factors over which we have control that contribute to the rise of terrorism. And they see politics, diplomacy, and all the rest as bothersome obstructions to blowing the shit out of anyone who doesn’t like us.

Eyes and smiles.

She steps lightly over the uneven ground, choosing her path carefully. I follow, outstretched hand grasping hers. The night air lends its pensive calm to my thoughts. Twilight has given way to an outburst of stars falling from the sky. Each one connected to us in a sea of unseen forces. There are times such as this when I understand what it means to be more than myself. Released from the prison of my ego to reconnect with the singularity that is the beginning and the end.

My feet keep me moving forward, our footsteps in sync. The journey we're on leads us toward a new location, but it means more than that. The destination has the promise of a new beginning. It excites me to think of what we'll find when we get there. I don't really know what's out there, but I do know the importance of the one you take with you. Our eyes and smiles meet, pausing for a moment to appreciate the gift.
